Situated in the middle finger of the southernmost mainland of Greece, the area know as MANI is one of the most beautiful in Greece. The huge Taigetos mountains, covered with ancient Olive groves and dotted with Cyprus trees, fall into the turquoise seas of the Messinian Gulf. Producing some of the very best organic olive oil you can buy, this area is also famous for the big, black Kalamata eating olives.
Aghios Nicolaos is the type of Greek village you would have found 30 years ago and you thought no longer existed. Every day fishermen bring their catch to the harbour, 2 minutes walk from the house. Bougainvilleas sprawl over garden walls, wild thyme, jasmine, orange and lemon blossom scent the air.
Aghios has very little in the way of tourism although breakfast, lunch and dinner are within 3 minutes walk. Cold drinks, newspapers as well as fresh, hot bread are sold at the shop 30 paces away.
This is the perfect place to relax and is popular with walkers who may follow the waymarked paths or, during the cooler months, join the walking groups organised from nearby Kardamili village. Painters find the light in this area perfect. There are many little vignettes just waiting to be found and shady spots from which to paint them.
Many of the ancient historical sites - Olympia, Mistras, Ancient Messini, Diros Caves and Monemvasia - are an easy daytrip away. You may take a local taxi, hire a car for the day or join a local coach party, as you please....
